"W" is a South Korean drama which aired from July 20 to September 14, 2016. It stares Lee Jong-Suk, Han Hyo-joo, Kim Eui-sung, Jung Yoo-jin, Lee Tae-hwan and Lee Si-eon.

  • Kim Eui-sung as Oh Sung-moo

BRIEF SUMMARY

Oh Sung Moo is a 58 year old divorcee and cartoonist who felt good-for-nothing until the success of his webtoon, “W.” He later realized that the webtoon he created had a life of its own thereby urging him to create decisions that`ll also affect the life of his only daughter, Oh Yeon-Joo. Oh Yeon-Joo is a 2nd year resident doctor at Myung Sei Hospital, who after being amusingly persuaded by her superior and "W" fan to get spoilers from her father, decided to surreptitiously get the ending of "W." Unknowingly, she would be involve in a life-changing and out-of-this-world encounter with Kang Chul, the main character of "W." Kang Chul, JN Global`s president, owner of W Channel and Olympic Gold Medalist in shooting, was in a continuous battle of curiosity with the incongruity and mysteriousness of the events in his life until he met the key to his life.

REVIEWS

Story

The story was really fascinating. Its theme will really touch story writers, authors, fans and readers who have admirations for characters because the main character in the webtoon of this drama came to life which may be a fantasy many readers and writers have.

I would`ve liked this story so much better if the story showed more of Kang Chul, the webtoon`s main lead in the Korean drama, in his life in the "W" webtoon series. Such scenes would`ve provided more relatable experiences for the viewers at the same time opportunities for the audience to really get to know and see Kang Chul`s character based on his daily life in the W webtoon series, not just through narration. There were some scenes that showed his life in the webtoon and real life. However, it would`ve been better if the drama also focused on his life in the webtoon at the same time in real life instead of just mainly his life simply switching from one world to another. Also, it would`ve been even more relatable if more scenes of Oh Yeon-Joo admiring her favorite character were shown.

In the peak of the drama`s story, it became quite confusing because there were a lot of variables which might cloud viewers` perspectives a bit. Despite the lacking preferred additional scenes, the over-all concept`s relatable and realistic regarding viewers` fantasies.

Actors and Scenes

Han Hyo-joo played her part quite well. She played a happy, bubbly and pretty doctor who had a genuine compassion for Kang Chul. Her emotions, reactions, and facial expressions were on point especially when she`s pondering or speaking to herself.

Lee Jong-suk  played a charismatic, calm, and laid-back character. In the drama, there were some unexpectedly cute and funny scenes which surprisingly still match the character`s over-all openly mysterious personality. His acting for the character`s personality seemed very natural.

Kim Eui-sung played an alcoholic and grumpy old man. His acts on all scenes were very much fitted for the character and its different personality traits.

The tranformation from the webtoon on the tablet and in the books to real life was greatly fascinating. The scenes which included fantasy-like happenings looked realistic because of the great effects.

Rating (3/5)

All in all, the "W" had a very interesting concept. However, as a viewer and K-Drama admirer, there seems to be some areas where it`s missing some important points essential to a more relatable show. The drama focused too much on the teleporting of characters between the 2 worlds and the issues associated with the switching, and less on the character`s lives and relationships. Nonetheless, despite some puzzling scenes, it was a fun drama to watch which might provide some suspense and thrill.
